Ice Spice Addresses Colorism Claims About Her Rise to Fame

Rising rapper Ice Spice has seen both success and criticism since breaking onto the music scene in 2022. Some have attributed her meteoric rise to fame to colorism due to her light complexion.

In an interview with Teen Vogue, Ice Spice addressed these claims directly. While acknowledging that people have such opinions, she said "I feel like that's not something personal to me."

Ice Spice pointed out that colorism has been an issue throughout history. She said she tries "not to feed into negativity" from those making colorism claims, noting that their intent is often "not out of a good place" and ends up putting "somebody else down."

Ice Spice has continued to focus on her music and connections. At Summer Jam 2022, she brought out fellow light-skinned rapper Flo Milli, which some saw as a response to colorism accusations.

The 23-year-old rapper from the Bronx remains positive about her success, saying "My job is being a rapper. Like, what the f***? That's mad lit."

Ice Spice's breakthrough hit "Munch" went viral on social media in 2022, garnering her attention from Drake, Capitol Records, and high-profile collaborations with artists like Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj, and Lil Tjay.

While Ice Spice acknowledges that colorism is a real issue, she does not attribute her own success solely to that factor. Instead, she cites her talent, persistence and connections as the primary drivers of her rising fame. Ultimately, Ice Spice wants the focus to remain on her art and music, not irrelevant "negativity."
